do something good for myself
“Kind of interesting to take up Kung Fu at the age of 35 - I think I assumed that you had to start learning martial arts as a kid, or you'd never really get anywhere with it. I dunno. But I had just quit smoking and was absolutely determined to do something good for myself. Couldn't bear the thought of gossiping with a bunch of other women on the treadmills at Curves, so I showed up at Sheng Chi Kung Fu with my fingers crossed and Ben Gay in my back pocket.
What an amazing experience it's been so far!
I think I expected (ok, maybe feared) finding myself in a room full of people trying to prove something, with huge egos and attitudes spilling out all over the floor. (I don't do attitude very well, which is the main reason I've never studied before now.) What a nice surprise it was to find a comfortable, supportive atmosphere where it's ok to be a beginner, and where it's a good thing to be learning - as opposed to already knowing or showing off - something every day.
It reflects well on Shun Shifu Weaver that all of his instructors are amazing - patient, knowledgeable, talented and yet somehow also humble (not to mention awfully darn young)! Shun Shifu and Shifu Liz do a great job of challenging us and have (gently) encouraged me in the areas where I feel most intimidated. Shifu Leslie and Mr. Cuneo have spent countless hours putting up with me in both group and individual lessons, and although I sometimes get frustrated and feel like I'm never going to learn certain techniques, their patience and teaching ability somehow pays off.
I've been through a couple of belts now and I gotta admit I still feel pretty darn awkward at times. But that's ok too...when I'm feeling my most awkward, Shun Shifu somehow makes me feel that I'm doing well and progressing the way I should be.
Kung Fu is wonderfully challenging, and I'm sure that's the case at any quon you visit. The difference, maybe, at Sheng Chi is their ability and willingness to challenge each of us at the level that works best for us individually, allowing us to study as often, and as seriously, as we are able to.
Without the attitude.”
